'Born the son of a blacksmith, and receiving only two years of formal education, Ben Chifley's life is the story of intellect and ability overcoming social and educational disadvantage. He became a train driver, got involved in union affairs, was elected to Parliament, and became Australia's Prime Minister in 1945. Chifley introduced a wide range of social reforms, and State-owned institutions. The author, Professor Crisp, worked with Chifley as a public servant.'
