Description:
This album contains spirituals from the American Civil War era and before. Spirituals were often "code songs" with double meanings used in the "Underground Railroad" movement to smuggle black slaves to the northern states and Canada, containing maps and secret messages about how and when to escape. Michelle not only sings spirituals, but also leads veterans' singing groups and supports the homeless, and her deeply emotional voice on the album's opening track not only honors Harriet Tubman, a black emancipation woman leader, but also expresses her own generous and compassionate spirit. It is also a good representation of Michelle's own generous and compassionate spirit. Wade In The Water" tells where to walk on the river to prevent dogs from sniffing out the scent of slaves fleeing in the night, and "Canaan's Land" is about the route to Canada. The powerful music of hope by people who lived through incredible oppression and suffering must have new power in this day and age.
