Description:
Josef Rheinberger [1839-1901], also known as Furtwängler's teacher, was a German Romantic composer, organist, and educator. Rheinberger's music, which is said to be a fusion of early Romantic elements and Baroque polyphony, is characterized by many familiar and beautiful works, and about 20 years ago a CD of his works for violin and organ was a bestseller. This CD contains Rheinberger's most notable choral and organ works, and offers a taste of his style, which has been called the "Fauré of southern Germany. The recordings were made in a church by an Italian group, and are melodious and atmospheric. The work is a mass for four-part male chorus and organ, Op.1901898. The work is a concise and elegant demonstration of Rheinberger's talent for melodic creativity, and dares to embody Catholic values and sweetness in the secular German musical culture of the late 19th century. 12 character pieces - "Peace at Dusk" Op.156 No.101888, composed in 1901898. It is a peaceful, sober organ piece, unrelated to the unaccompanied choral work of the same name composed in 1871. Ave Maria (from the Mass) Op.172 Rheinberger wrote a number of Ave Maria, but this one is similar in style to Bruckner's early motets, with a beautiful finish in a calm tone.Organ Sonata No. 19 in G minor, Op. 193Of the 20 organ sonatas composed by Rheinberger, the most magnificent and well-known to organ fans is No. 19.
