Description:

A live recording of a concert featuring church music composed by Mozart in his late Salzburg period is now available. The "Coronation Mass" was not named after Mozart, but it was popular at the court in Vienna, where it was performed at the coronation of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II in 1791 under the direction of Antonio Salieri, the court music director. At the time of composition, it was forbidden for church music to be overly complex, which may be why the easy-to-understand, florid tune was favored. Here, a church sonata and an evening section, which seem to have been written at about the same time, are added to create a festive atmosphere. The Bavarian Radio Chorus also gives a richly accented and colorful performance with an up-and-coming ensemble of young and mid-career soloists. (No lyrics are included in the booklet.) Naxos Japan
