Petitgirard, Laurent (1950-)
Description:
This is a collection of works by Laurent Petitgirard, a contemporary French composer known for his lyrical style. The opening piece, "Etatsd'ame - Sentiments," is a concerto for saxophone, a piece he has long wanted to compose. Instead of having the soloist play two or three instruments, as is often the case, he used only the alto saxophone, pursuing the tone and expressiveness of the instrument to the utmost limit. In the first movement, the flute and clarinet are used effectively to create a finish reminiscent of an ensemble concerto. Solitaire Loneliness," with its effective use of percussion, has no connection between the tune and the title; Petit Girard explains that the title refers only to "the composer's feelings toward a blank slate. The symphonic poem "Marathon," born of an opera that was never written, tells the story of three men who are trying to make it to the Olympics. The symphonic poem "Flaine," which takes us on a spiritual journey through art, architecture, and culture, is another moving work. Naxos Japan
