"Since her death in 1941, Virginia Woolf has come to be recognised as one of the supreme prose writers of the twentieth century.  Her elder brother Thoby, while an undergraduate at Cambridge, gathered round him a circle of friends, including Leonard Woolf, Lytton Strachey, Clive Bell and J. M. Keynes, who formed the nucleus of the famous 'Bloomsbury Group' of later years, in which Virginia and her sister Vanessa, the painter, became leading figures.  In 1912 she married Leonard Woolf, and three years later her first novel, The Voyage Out, was published.  In the thirty years between her marriage and her death she wrote fifteen books, including the epoch-making novels To the Lighthouse and The Waves; as well as innumerable critical articles, essays dn stories, and kept a voluminous diary: an astonishing achievement for a writer who was plagued all through her life by mental illness."
