George Greenough's The Innermost Limits of Pure Fun [1970] was a groundbreaking film, documenting surfing with the kind of obsessive, individualist style & effort that is necessary to make true art. A Santa Barbara native, he surfed Rincon at dusk to avoid the crowded lineups. He went places where he could be unbothered, immersing himself with his own ideas for inventions and innovation. If you've seen the film, then you'll know that Greenough decided he wanted to share the slow-motion POV perspective of surfing from INSIDE the barrel, where he felt that all time & space becomes one. So he strapped a 28-pound camera (complete with a homemade waterproof housing) to his shoulder & captured footage that no one had ever seen before... that is, unless they had ever surfed on the inside of a barrel. The resulting footage yielded a surreal, intense experience, a mixture of becoming one with nature & exploring one's own inner consciousness. Perhaps it was this decision to look inward that made the film appealing to a new band at the time, Pink Floyd, & they started to use Greenough's film during their shows. 

The film also serves as artifact, documenting surfing's shift from large wooden boards to small fiberglass boards, a change that Greenough nurtured with his own designs. In order to do sharp bottom turns & long barrel rides, Greenough also invented his own style of fins inspired by the rear dorsal fins of tuna. He revolutionized boards, practiced a completely new style of surfing, & changed action sports cinematography forever. 

Are there limits of fun? Maybe not, & maybe that's what Greenough was saying all along: the internal journey is never-ending. Greenough's contributions include messages that carry their weight far beyond the boundaries of counterculture: It's important to think for yourself, to create for the sake of creating, & to share your original ideas with the world.
