“The Ngaro and Gia people inhabit the Whitsunday region of Queensland, Australia.
The Ngaro homelands stretch across the Whitsunday Island chain and take in that part of the mainland encompassed by Airlie Beach and Cannonvale.
The Gia homelands take in the southern bank of the Don River near Bowen and stretch south to the northern bank of the St Helen’s River near Calen.
The two tribes bartered and traded implements and weapons and came together on a seasonal basis to hunt for shellfish.  They were saltwater people who utilised the resources of this region.  They were expert seafarers and travelled from island to island, and to and from the mainland in both bark and outrigger canoes.  They feasted on shellfish, turtle, dugong, fish and native bushfoods all of which were in great abundance in the reefs, waters, mangroves, rainforests and woodlands of the Whitsundays.
The Dreaming of these people are kept within the stories of the old people and are being handed down to the Aboriginal children of this region to paint stories for all to see.”
