Boccherini reimagined! A French-American cellist who won the Rostropovich International Cello Competition at the age of 25, Sonia Wieder-Atherton has recorded for Valois, RCA, Naive, and many other labels to great acclaim. Following the LP release of "Bach: Unaccompanied" (ALPHA 599), she releases a unique album of Boccherini's concerto, which is a free arrangement based on the original work. The first thing that makes this album unique is the instrumentation: in addition to the cello, the trio includes a cimbalom, which was chosen to emphasize the dance-like character of the piece, and a violin for the interplay with the counter-melody. In addition, a bassoon and double bass are added for G.476, which has a more polyphonic texture. Each movement is freely reconstructed around the solo cello part of the original, and furthermore, a "cadenza" consisting of arrangements of various works is inserted in between. The original compositions are diverse, ranging from jazz to contemporary to baroque. These pieces make up a very thrilling music, and it is surprising that it can be listened to in a very interesting way without any sense of discomfort.This is a wonderful album created by Wieder-Atherton himself, the French zimbalom player Françoise Riverin, who is active in experimental music as well as traditional music, and a warm ensemble that is in tune with the intimacy of the players.
