Sarracenia x Red Sumatra is a remarkable, nearly all red pitcher plant. It closely resembles S. flava atropurpurea, but with light venation, and a ruffled hood. There can be some hint of its S. leucophylla parentage on the top of the hood, and in new growth, with pink to almost white highlights. The nectar glands are quite prolific and attract lots of insect activity. S. x Red Sumatra has a few red traps in the Spring that darken to deep red by mid-summer. There is a second crop of maroon pitchers in the Fall, and many winter phyllodia (flat leaves). The showy flowers are orange-red, and mildly fragrant. They generally bloom from April to May before the pitchers fully develop. This is an excellent highlight plant for the bog garden or collection, and will grow in northern zones with winter protection. Red Sumatra is a naturally occurring hybrid (S. flava x leucophylla) or its binomial name S. x moorei. It was selected for its parentage, charm and beauty. S x Red Sumatra like similar red-tubed Pitcher Plants produce a small number of pitchers. Like all red-tubed pitcher plants, the red coloration requires full sun to express itself, and may be delayed a year or two by transplanting.

Plants are shipped bare-root, wrapped in damp sphagnum moss. In it's dormant season, it will be shipped as a dormant rhizome with trimmed off pitchers. Photographs are representative of the cultivar, and not the specific plant shipped.
