1984 McLaren TAG MP4/2

The predecessor, the MP4/1 was introduced in 1981, powered by the ubiquitous Ford Cosworth DFV. It continued throughout '82 and '83 with moderate success - six GP wins in total. It was the first Formula One car to use a monocoque chassis wholly manufactured from carbon fibre composite materials, a concept which is now ubiquitous, in an actual race.

Towards the end of 1983, the newly developed TAG Porsche turbo engine was installed in place of the now mostly outclassed DFV and raced in the final Grands Prix as part of the hurried development programme for the engine.

By 1984 the car was fully competitive - driven by the works drivers Niki Lauda and Alain Prost. So competitive in fact that between them they won 12 out of 16 Grands Prix that season, with Lauda just beating Prost to the title by half a point - the closest finish in Formula 1 history and winning the Constructors Champion ship for McLaren.

The car shown is Lauda's Austrian Grand Prix winner - the only time an Austrian driver won an his home race.
